7. South Sea Business (Sumatra, Malay)
1. History
Two major businesses in the South Seas (Southeast Asia) are the oil palm cultivation business in Dutch Sumatra and the rubber cultivation business on the Malay Peninsula. The former established a joint-stock company with a capital of 4 million guilders in Medan City, East Coast Province of Sumatra Island in 1929 under the Dutch Commercial Code, and called it N, V, Tozan, Kultur, Mars Happei (Tozan Cultivation Co., Ltd.). The company began its founding. In December of the same year, a land concession of approximately 12,000 hectares was acquired in Kota Binan, the east coast province of the island, and in 1931, a land concession of approximately 6,000 hectares was acquired near Labuanbilik Port (Pane region) in the province. ) After obtaining a 75-year hereditary land lease (Elfpact), in the same year the farm was first cultivated in the Pane region, and the garden was named Ajam Garden. In 1933, due to circumstances, the land in Kota Pinan was returned to us as an uncultivated land, and since then, the company has devoted all its efforts to the development of Ajamu Gardens.
The rubber cultivation business in Peninsular Malaysia is operated under the name of Consolidated Sango Limited. Sango Company is the oldest and largest Japanese rubber cultivation company in the South Seas (Southeast Asia). It was established in November 1906 by leasing approximately 2,000 acres of land in Pengerang, Johor Estuary, Johor State on the Malay Peninsula, and then in 1909, it leased 3,000 acres in Bat Baha, the same state, and since then, the leased land has been expanded. With this in mind, they acquired and annexed rubber plantations owned by foreigners and natives in the area, and now have over 40,000 acres of rubber plantations. During that time, there were changes in our company’s organization, and in 1930 we changed our company structure from a cooperative organization to a joint-stock company under the British Company Law, changed our name from Sango Company to Consolidated Sango Company Limited, and changed our company name to Consolidated Sango Company Limited. In December of the same year, it was registered with the Government of Singapore, British Straits Colony, as a fully paid-up company worth $5 million. The name Sango Company was originally established in August 1902 as a separate unit of the Taiwanese Governor-General’s Office in Xiamen, Fujian Province, as a trading company for Japan’s overseas development, and was headed by Naoya Aikusawa. He was 35 years old, and coincidentally, the number 35 coincided with the year 1909(Meiji35), so the young man’s enthusiasm continued south and reached a corner of the Malay Peninsula. He started the rubber cultivation business, gave it the name Sango Company, and painstakingly laid the foundation for what it is today. Our company has four rubber plantations: Pengerang Plantation, Bat Baha Plantation, Kleibtsaal Plantation, and 2,600 Years Forestry Plantation, and the management is based on joint investment between the founders, Mr. Naoya Aikusawa and Baron Hisaya Iwasaki. However, in August 1940, Mr. Aikusawa passed away from illness, and from December of the same year, the management was transferred to Tozan Noji Co., Ltd.
